Many of us are good at holding space for others. When a friend is struggling, we listen without judgment. When a loved one is grieving, we sit beside them. When a child is upset, we offer comfort and patience.
But when it comes to our own feelings, we're often far less gentle. We rush ourselves, criticize ourselves or push our emotions aside to keep going.
Holding space for yourself means offering yourself the same care, patience and presence you so freely give to others. It's a quiet, powerful act of self-love, and it makes room for real healing.
What does it mean to hold space?
To hold space is to be fully present with someone without trying to fix, judge or rush them. It means saying, in words or actions: "Whatever you're feeling is welcome here."
When you hold space for yourself, you:
Allow your feelings without judging them.
Listen to what you need.
Give yourself time to process.
Respond with kindness rather than criticism.
Trust that you can move through difficult moments.
Why it matters
When we don't make room for our emotions, they don't disappear. They often show up in other ways: tension in the body, irritability, exhaustion, trouble sleeping or feeling disconnected.
Holding space for yourself can help you:
Understand your feelings more clearly.
Release emotional tension before it builds up.
Make wiser choices, based on what you truly need.
Feel more grounded and less overwhelmed.
Build trust in yourself, knowing you'll be there for you.
Signs you need to hold space for yourself
You might need some gentle inner care if you notice:
Feeling numb or "on autopilot".
Snapping at people over small things.
Crying unexpectedly, or feeling close to tears.
Constantly keeping busy to avoid feeling.
A sense of heaviness or restlessness you can't explain.
These are signals, not failures. They're your inner self asking for attention.
How to hold space for yourself
Create a pause
Find a quiet moment, even just five minutes. Sit somewhere comfortable, put your phone aside and take a few slow breaths.
Ask, "How am I really feeling?"
Go beyond "fine" or "busy". Are you tired, sad, anxious, frustrated, lonely or overwhelmed? Naming the feeling helps you understand it.
Allow the feeling
Instead of pushing it away, gently say: "It's okay to feel this." You don't have to like the feeling, but you can allow it to be there.
Notice where it lives in your body
Is there tightness in your chest, a lump in your throat or heaviness in your shoulders? Place a hand there and breathe slowly.
Speak to yourself kindly
Imagine what you would say to a dear friend feeling this way. Then say it to yourself: "This is hard. You're doing your best. I'm here."
Ask what you need
Do you need rest, comfort, movement, connection, a good cry, time outdoors or simply some quiet? Listen, and if possible, offer yourself that need.
Gentle ways to hold space
Journaling: write freely about what you're feeling without editing or judging.
Breathing: slow, deep breaths can help you stay present with difficult emotions.
Movement: a slow walk or gentle stretching can help emotions flow.
Comfort rituals: a warm bath, a cup of tea, a soft blanket.
Nature: sit outside and let the natural world hold you.
Rest: sometimes the kindest thing is to lie down and rest.
Connection: reaching out to someone you trust is also a way to care for yourself.
What holding space is not
Holding space for yourself doesn't mean:
Fixing every feeling immediately.
Staying stuck in difficult emotions forever.
Ignoring the need for support from others or professionals.
It simply means meeting yourself with presence and kindness, wherever you are. If difficult feelings persist or feel overwhelming, please reach out to a trusted person or a health professional.
A holding-space ritual
Try this when you feel emotionally full:
Find a quiet, comfortable place.
Light a candle or dim the lights.
Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly.
Breathe slowly for one minute.
Ask: "What am I feeling? What do I need?"
Write down whatever comes to mind.
Close with a kind phrase: "I'm allowed to feel. I'm allowed to heal."
Questions for reflection
1. How do I usually respond when I'm struggling?
2. What would it look like to treat myself as I treat a dear friend?
3. What is one small way I could hold space for myself this week?
You deserve your own care
You deserve the same compassion you offer to everyone else. Holding space for yourself is not selfish or indulgent. It's how you heal, grow and stay well enough to keep caring for the people and things you love.
Today, pause, breathe and gently ask yourself how you're really doing. Then listen.
