We hold on to so much. Objects we no longer use. Thoughts that keep circling. Old beliefs about who we should be. Expectations, regrets, worries and plans that no longer fit our lives.
Holding on can feel safe. But over time, it can leave us feeling heavy, cluttered and stuck. There's simply no room for anything new.
Letting go doesn't mean giving up. It means making space. At Viridian Vibrance, we honor the gentle art of releasing what no longer serves. When we let go, softly and kindly, we make room for peace.
Why letting go is hard
Letting go can be difficult because:
We fear loss or regret.
We attach meaning to objects, roles or memories.
We feel responsible for keeping things the way they were.
We don't know who we'll be without certain beliefs or habits.
Change feels uncertain.
These feelings are natural. Letting go is a process, not a single moment, and it can be done gently, at your own pace.
What can we let go of?
Physical clutter
Items we no longer use, need or love can quietly weigh us down. Clearing them can bring a surprising sense of lightness.
Racing thoughts
Worries, overthinking and mental to-do lists can fill the mind. Learning to release them, even temporarily, creates calm.
Old beliefs
Beliefs like "I must always be productive" or "I'm not good enough" may have formed long ago. Questioning and releasing them can be freeing.
Expectations
Expectations of how life, others or ourselves "should" be often lead to disappointment. Letting go of rigid expectations makes room for acceptance.
Past hurts
Holding on to resentment or regret can keep us tied to the past. Letting go, when you're ready, can bring peace.
Commitments that drain us
Not every obligation needs to continue forever. Releasing what no longer fits can free time and energy.
Gentle ways to let go
Start small
Choose one drawer, one thought pattern or one commitment to release. Small steps feel manageable and build confidence.
Acknowledge what it gave you
Before letting something go, take a moment to appreciate what it offered: comfort, lessons, memories. Gratitude makes release easier.
Write it down
Write down a thought, worry or belief you want to release. Seeing it on paper can create distance. Some people like to tear up or safely burn the paper as a symbol of release.
Use your breath
Breathe in deeply and, as you breathe out, imagine releasing tension or a specific thought. Repeat a few times.
Ask helpful questions
Does this still serve me?
Is this helping me become who I want to be?
What would I gain by letting this go?
Be patient
Some things take time to release. It's okay to let go a little at a time.
Letting go of racing thoughts
When your mind feels busy, try this:
Notice the thought without judging it.
Name it: "worry", "planning", "remembering".
Imagine placing it on a leaf floating down a stream.
Watch it drift away.
Return to your breath.
Thoughts may come back, and that's okay. Each time, you practice releasing them a little more easily.
Letting go of old beliefs
Beliefs are not facts. They're stories we've learned. To gently release an old belief:
Notice the belief: "I have to do everything perfectly."
Ask where it came from.
Consider whether it's still true or helpful.
Create a kinder belief: "Doing my best is enough."
Repeat the new belief often.
What happens when we let go
When we release what no longer serves us, we often feel:
Lighter, physically and emotionally.
Calmer, with fewer things pulling at our attention.
More open to new experiences and ideas.
More present, less stuck in the past or worried about the future.
Freer to live in a way that feels true.
A letting go ritual
Try this gentle practice:
Sit quietly and take a few slow breaths.
Think of one thing you're ready to release.
Hold your hands in loose fists, imagining you're holding it.
Breathe in deeply.
As you breathe out, open your hands, palms up.
Silently say: "I let this go. I make space for peace."
Rest for a few breaths and notice how you feel.
Questions for reflection
1. What am I holding on to that feels heavy?
2. What would I like to make space for in my life?
3. What is one small thing I could let go of today?
Let go, breathe in, feel lighter
Letting go is a gentle art, one that we practice again and again. Each time we release something that no longer serves us, we create space for peace, joy and new beginnings.
Today, let go of one small thing, take a deep breath and notice how much lighter you feel.
